Examination and conservation of the 155 objects in the exhibition entitled Chinese Art of the Warring States Period; Change and Continuity, 480 222 B.C. formed a major part of the work of the Technical Laboratory for three years. Materials included jade, bronze, inlaid and gilded bronze, iron, gold, lacquer, and bone. Some objects had been in the Smithsonian'spossession for 71 years; others had never been examined by the Technical Laboratory. Handling the data on these objects was a major undertaking. A computer-readable list was set up so that the data could be sorted and manipulated using automated data processing (ADP) techniques. Each object was examined and a brief report written. Conservation treatments ranged from light inpainting of abraded spots to almost total reconstruction. Treatments included the manufacture of carefully-fitted bases using a duplicating router, electrotyping reinforcing backs, cleaning with an ultrasonic file, treatment for bronze disease, removal of old lacquers, polishing and re-lacquering, etc. This paper discusses the care and preparations that go into even a small exhibition.
