Abstract
The name of Ralph Mayer (1895-1979) is probably the most recognized of all persons who have written about the technology of art in the twentieth century. Because of this supposition Mayer's first book, The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques, has often been referred to as the artist's bible . This paper, Part 1 of a two part study, presents a review of Mayer's professional life as an art technologist, artist, writer, teacher, and conservator of paintings until 1940.
