A summary is given of the effects of the following possible factors in the pitting corrosion of metals: (1) aggressive anions and their diffusion rates; (2) unaggressive anions; (3) solution concentration; (4) metal structure and physical state; (5) oxidizing agents; (6) oxygen affinity of the metal; (7) extent and conditions of cathodic reactions; (8) composition changes in medium during reaction.
