This article is written by an artist who has devoted considerable time and effort to copying and photographing cave paintings in Spain. Upper Paleolithic cave paintings are found primarily on the north coast of Spain, in the Bilbao region, while Mesolithic paintings are found along the east and south coasts. The Mesolithic paintings from the east coast are primarily in rock shelters rather than caves. Problems of preservation in rock shelters are mentioned. The bracketing dates of Mesolithic paintings are placed at 10,000 and 4,000 B.C., although the evidence for dating is not presented and it is admitted that establishing dates is difficult. These putative Mesolithic examples are the focus of the article. The rock shelter sites themselves are described in some detail, and the wall paintings are described and illustrated in black and white.
