This article describes the design of a photographic display in the town of Gisborne, a city of about 30,000 people on the North Island of New Zealand. The Gisborne Museum and Arts Centre had its origin in the early 1950s. The town was founded around the time when the first cameras arrived in the area, so its entire history has been documented in film. A museum volunteer sorted, catalogued, and researched the extensive photographic collection. A design for an exhibit was developed that was based on a family photograph album placed on a sloping reading desk. Photographs were divided between four albums, general and transport, town, country, and people. Room was left for extensive captions. The display was extremely labour-intensive to complete, but the great popularity of the exhibit is a reward for the time spent constructing it.
