Abstract
The previous ten years' developments (up to 1954) in silicone coating resins are reviewed. A major recent development in 1954 was dramatic improvement of the heat stability of previous resins. The article highlights improvements in film properties and heat stability, alkyd modifications for use in both heat and weathering applications and silicone-phenolic resins having improved water and weather resistance. The specific topics covered are: heat resistant silicone resins; silicone resins for blending; silicone alkyds; silicone-phenolics; special silicone resins; and masonry water repellents. A final section of the article lists some of the applications where silicones are being used and suggests types of resins that should be used. This article may be most interesting to conservators dealing mid-20th century objects that may have been painted with silicone. It also may be interesting from a purely historical perspective.
