Technological gatekeepers are the individuals in R&D organizations who tend to communicate more with colleagues outside the organization and who tend to read the professional literature more widely and faithfully. They thus serve to channel information from the outside world to technologists within the organization. Analogues of gatekeepers are defined in other areas, such as voter opinion leaders who are more exposed to information outside the immediate community and strongly influence local public opinion. These observations have implications for management policy in the R&D organization. For one thing, it is found that gatekeeper networks are close to the optimal means for bringing technical information from outside into an organization. Recognizing the gatekeepers may have some advantages, so his/her characteristics are listed. Most important is that he/she is a highly competent technical performer. Gatekeepers also tend to hold advanced degrees and to occupy the first line of technical supervision; i.e., management is promoting the right people in most cases. They participate more frequently in professional meetings, tend to work well with groups of collaborators, and are generally more busy in most other respects. Finally, it was found that managers could easily recognize gatekeepers. The information in this chapter is directly relevant to the management of conservation laboratories.
