The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 both direct the Secretary of the Interior to issue regulations for the curation and exchange of prehistoric and historic archeological collections recovered under certain Federal statutes. This proposed rule establishes standards and guidelines to be followed by Federal agencies to preserve material remains and associated records recovered in conjunction with Federal projects and programs. This action should ensure that those collections are deposited in repositories with adequate long-term curatorial capabilities.
