Abstract
This paper is a non-technical summary intended to inform interested individuals from a variety of disciplines about the potential of data processing capabilities for the analysis of visual art. Imaging technologies and graphics might be profitably adapted to the needs of art historians conducting style analysis. Quantifying objects for analysis would increase the importance of the objects themselves relative to external sources of information in art historical analyses. Computerization would provide objective, quantified models or replicas of each piece, and in turn would increase the scientific rigor of art historical methods. The hardware and software components of the envisioned system are mentioned. Morphological analysis based on linear and volumetric measurements of sculptures are mentioned as a potential initial application. Indian sculpture in particular is mentioned. Phases of the project are: technology survey; system assembly; and system application. The concluding section describes the author's own interest in early Indian sculpture and the potential contribution of computerized imaging to his studies.
