Abstract
The diverse materials and construction techniques of contemporary art demand a wide range of conservation skills. Whenever the conservation treatment may affect the aesthetics of a piece, the original artist should be consulted if possible. In any case, consultation between the conservator and the curator is necessary. Restraint is called for in the conservation treatment of modern art, and the risks of handling and travel should be minimized.
