Abstract
The completed Statue of Liberty restoration project yielded new information about building preservation and maintenance. This article presents some of the findings briefly and indicates that future scholarly publication of the information is planned. A brief discussion of the statue's history and the original engineering and building techniques is presented. A major problem was galvanic corrosion which required complete replacement of the iron ribs of the statue. The irregular shapes of the ribs made shaping the stainless steel replacement bars particularly difficult. Removal of paint was another task which required innovative solutions. Of continuing concern is corrosion of the exterior copper skin, which is not proceeding uniformly. Different atmospheric conditions from one side of the statue to the other cause different corrosion patterns, as do differences in the metallurgy of the copper. Study of the process of corrosion on the statue has led to advances in understanding of the chemical mechanisms involved. Lighting was another area of innovation. A 'whole-building' concept of preservation emerged from the project.
