Abstract
A Ming Dynasty silk scroll imitation of Li Longmian’s figure paintings is one of the ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting collections of a museum in China. The original copy has been badly damaged. The painting is broken; the silk is brittle and has been eaten by moths. Due to mistreatment during opening and closing of the scroll and careless preservation, the whole scroll has extensive damage. The difficulties of repair include cleaning, removing of back lining, matching the pieces, restoration, making up of lost colors and so on. The original holes in the scroll were identified one by one and repaired separately; bending cracks have been reinforced and lost colors have been carefully repainted. The worn-out and blurred painting is now clearly visible. This repair process provides a good example of a combination of modern science and traditional technology.
