Evaluated are three types of surplus film from the movie industry which are available for use in 35mm still cameras. Also compared are results from several independent companies which distribute and process Eastman Color 5247, Eastman Color 5293 and Fujicolor 8518. The 5247 is shown to have extremely high resolving power and fine grain with the higher speed 5293 close behind. The 8518 is next. All rate above the test standard (Kodacolor II). Advantages cited include user choice of getting prints, slides or both after returning exposed film to the independent supplier from which it was obtained, and relarively low cost. Disadvantages mentioned include being tied to the supplier for developing services, a lower scratch resistance than seen in Kodacolor films, and a long time for processing (21/2 to 61/2 weeks).
