Abstract
An aboriginal wallaby skin water bag tanned with emu bush leaves was made with the hair side turned inward. It was made waterproof by tying off the legs and other natural openings. The skin was dry, brittle, torn and seriously deformed. It was decided to humidify the object, make temporary repairs on the outside, then rehumidify, reshape and dry before making permanent repairs from the inside. The bag was to be exhibited in its original form as a water-carrier. The description given of the practical work covers testing ph (3.6), trials with adhesive (beva 371 was chosen because it adhered immediately, and would resist moisture during humidification). Final repairs were with primal ac 235 and japanese mulberry paper. The humidification technique is described: initial repairs (beva/gossamer nylon), rehumidification and shaping with two balloons gradually inflated, and final interior repairs. Gaps were filled with paper pulp, cmc (2%) as adhesive, dry pigments as colourants.
