Abstract
A sealed glove chamber was used for deacidifying with 28% ammonia solution. The object (an old mouldy baseball glove) was left inside for 15 minutes. Normally it would have been air-dried for 2-3 days before applying an emulsion for cleaning or lubricating, to avoid risk of darkening the leather. The preferred ingredients for the cleaning agent were not all available so orvus wa paste was substituted for arkopal n 100 and trichlorofluorethane for trichlorotrifluoroethane. In addition cmc 200 carboxymethyl cellulose and water are involved. The amount of water used can be decreased if darkening occurs when testing very sensitive leathers. There is also a discussion on polyvinyl acetate adhesives for use on leather. Those preferred are elvace 1874 and talas r 2258, both producing clear films of great flexibility. Bedacryl (synocryl) also produces a clear film, as does jade 403. Pva ayat and ayaf become hard and stiff on drying.
