Abstract
The microtome technique allows samples of heterogeneous materials to be prepared for analysis. The required equipment and its usage will be presented in detail. The various applications are reviewed, particularly in the domain of paints and coatings. In this field, there are many surface and heterogeneity problems so that the microtome technique would appear to be highly appropriate.
