Although much attention today is focused on the use of multimedia technology and its incredible potential in education, the Generation 2 project (an ICCROM programme funded by the Getty Grant Program) has chosen to concentrate on learning and teaching methodology rather than on the media. This methodology proposes educational and support materials conceived for learning situations in which a facilitator replaces the teacher, thereby permitting more autonomy and responsibility. The paper focuses on the main aspects that make the methodology particularly innovative. Generation 2 was conceived to address challenges related to the training of museum professionals in sub-Saharan Africa, but its results will have a much wider scope.
