Abstract
The Collections Centre at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester opened in September 2001. The Centre covers 2400m2 and is housed in converted 19th century railway buildings. Its aim is to offer unprecedented access to the Museum’s previously hidden collections. Creating access to historic collections is a key concern of museum in the United Kingdom, and this is one of the first centres of its kind to open. This paper briefly describes the background and development of the Centre, and begins to consider the physical and philosophical challenges that access and inclusion pose for conservation. -- SCMRE
