Abstract
A solar tent has been designed for heat disinfestations of museum objects using solar radiation as an energy source. Tests show that small to medium-sized objects can be heated to 55[degree]C with one day of sunshine. Mixed cultures of various insect species did not survive treatment. Changes in moisture content of objects are reduced to a minimum by wrapping the objects in plastic bags during treatment. The temperature distribution is uniform enough to avoid formation of condensation on the surface of the objects. Heat can soften materials such as waxes and resins. Nevertheless, when other methods are not available, the solar tent provides a cheap and effective means of saving collections that would otherwise be lost to insect damage. -- SCMRE
