Abstract
The bronze statue of the Great Buddha at Kamakura, built about 700 years ago, was repaired after special preliminary examinations: (1) determination of the casting technique, (2) radiography, (3) photogrammetry, (4) ultrasonic measurement of the wall thickness, (5) chemical analyses of the bronze, (6) a plaster model of the inside surface of the neck, (7) geological examination, (8) solar heating of the statue, (9) safety against earthquakes, and tests prior to repair concerning techniques of welding and the use of adhesives and reinforced plastics. For the actual repair, a collar of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic was attached to the inside of the neck making a basket-like internal support. Improvement in earthquake proofing took the form of a new flat concrete pedestal. Also two solid concrete props inside the body under the hands were replaced by a steel frame in the shape of an inverted U, which has sufficient elasticity to absorb possible earthquake stresses.
