Abstract
Proposals for the setting up of a multiple counter system for small sample 14C dating at Harwell were first reported at the Berlin Low-Level Counting Conference (1981) and, later that year, the first application samples were measured. In July 1982, at the XIIth Radiocarbon Conference, a full report of the sustem then set up was given. Now, after two years of operating experience during which over 100 samples have been measured for a variety of applications, it seems appropriate to consider and comment on the overall performance of the system. This paper includes comments on the technical specifications, mention of some of the initial problems encountered and their solutions, and a description of some of the applications for which the system has been used. Proposals are also made for the future role of miniature gas counters for small sample 14C dating and possible new developments in respect to high precision dating of average sized archaeolgical samples, which stem from the miniature counter techniques.
