Abstract
The ancient Mayan site of Colha in northern Belize, Central America, has yielded vast chipped stone workshop deposits of chert indicating that this community was a center for stone tool production in the region. Identifying the stone tools produced at Colha has implications concerning the site's role in regional exchange systems and its relationship with neighboring centers. Trace element composition is used to characterized chert from Colha and chert throughout the chert-bearing zone of northern Belize. Multivariate clustering algorithms have been identified and their distributions through the formation mapped. Using the geological survey data, discriminant analysis applied to a survey of archaeological samples from Colha and neighboring sites. Colha chert is found to consist of two main types, both of which are available locally. Colha-like chert is found at all the archaeologcial sites examined.
