The Heuneburg in the upper Danube valley is a fortified hill settlement of the late Hallstatt period; mainly Hallstatt D. The abundance of thick sherds from large amphorae indicate contacts with the Rhone valley and even the old Greek Massilia, today Marseille. Among the finds from the hill settlement are a group of 16 very small pots of no typical Hallstatt shapes. Microchemical analysis of four of them showed the presence of gold in one pot and silver in two others. Iron oxide in the fourth proved this pot to have also been used for pyrotechnology, in this case melting down copper alloys. The amphorae sherds were examined and remains of olive oil could be detected as well as oil of grape stones, showing the amphorae to have served as containers for oil and wine.
