Abstract
Samples of different pottery types from several loci were prepared for thin-sections, which were then examined under the petrographic microscope. Virtually all samples were similar and consisted of subrounded quartz sand (about 1per thousand to 3per thousand) and coarse, angular quartz silt (about 25per thousand to 30per thousand) in a calcareous, fine silty clay matrix; traces of heavy minerals such as hornbelnde, epidote, and pyroxenes also occured. The mineralogy and texture of the samples match quite closely that of the Late Pleistocene loamy sediments that underlie the site. It is concluded, therfore, that both the Egyptian and Canaanite pottery shapes were locally made from the same material, evidently quarried at the same site. Splits of the different pottery types were also analyzed by neutron activation and their composition compared with pottery from the Nile Delta and several sites in the coastal plain of Israel, as well as with Canaanite forms from Deir el-Balah. The results of the neutron activation analysis show the Egyptian and Canaanite forms to be of local manufacture consistent with the thin section examination. This study is part of a project undertaken to explore the extent to which thin-section examination may be used to determine regional provenance.
