Abstract
The examination of sculpted altarpieces should enable the detection of local craft traditions and collaboration between craftsmen. An example described here is from Herbais sous Piétrain, inv. 4009, at the Musées royaux d'art et d'histoire, in Brussels, Belgium. The construction reveals excellent craftsmanship. It seems to have been polychromed once before being sculpted, and again after the sculptures and architectural decor were in place. The Oplinter altarpiece (inv. 3196) at the same museum is constructed in the same way. Both show the Antwerp mark and are dated to ca. 1530. -- AATA
