Abstract
Sulfur dioxide attack on marble results in the formation of gypsum crusts which eventually exfoliate. Treatment of such marble should involve the conversion of the gypsum crusts to calcite. The sulphur-reducing bacteria Desulphovibrio desulphuricans will aid such a conversion in an anaerobic environment. A treatment of affected marble with petroleum poultices contain ing the bacteria is proposed. -- AATA
