Abstract
A description of the six kinds of test paper used is followed by the method for producing fungal stains on these papers. The following reagents for stain removal are then described and their efficiency assessed: sodium hypochlorite (11 methods), bleaching powder (5 methods), sodium chlorite (1 method), chlorine dioxide (5 methods), chloramine T (2 methods), potassium permanganate (9 methods), hydrogen peroxide (2 methods), sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate (1 method), hydrochloric acid (1 method), citric acid (1 method), oxalic acid (5 methods), ammonium ferric alum (1 method). Of this ensemble, the oxidizing agents were most effective. The effect of the more useful methods on the paper was checked by accelerated ageing tests. Finally, a section deals with a special study on removing grease spots, including the use of solvents (ethanol, ether, naphtha, benzene, turpentine, trichlorethylene), soap and laundering detergents, absorbent powder, and alkalies.
