An account of restorations of frescoes in the Loggia di Galatea in the Farnesina, Rome, particularly Raphael's Galatea and the Polyphemus of Sebastiano del Piombo. Analyzes Maratti's restorations and states that the Galatea has retained virtually its original appearance. Illustrates giornate and a group of drawings by Sebastiano revealed under the polyphemus. Dates the Galatea 1513-14 and the Polyphemus immediately before that. Argues that the break in style caused by Raphael's Galatea made a unified conception impossible and led Agostino Chigi to abandon the decoration of the Loggia.
