The stone (see <i>IIC Abstracts 4336) was cleaned from powdery deposits, small scales were fixed with 4% solution of poly (methyl methacrylate) and necessary repairs executed. The console had been permanently fixed to the brick wall with Portland cement. To remove it, it was necessary to hammer out the bricks all around. Then the cement was removed mechanically, A detailed examination once more confirmed that soluble salts were responsible for the processes of the destruction. To extract these salts a kind of humidity chamber was constructed at the front of the relief, with free evaporation at the back. This proved to be quite effective. To prevent destructive activity by the small amounts of remaining salt a hygroscopic substance (polyethylene glycol 200) was introduced to the surface layers. As shown by experiments, this prevented in a large measure the crystallization of Na₂SO₄ . 10 H₂O, especially in large crystals. The console after all treatment was returned to its usual place.
