The sources and chemistry of waxes likely to be encountered in art objects are briefly reviewed and their gas-chromatograms are illustrated. Examples of the identification of waxes and wax-mixtures in a variety of objects are described and the advantages for this purpose of gas-chromatography over infrared spectroscopy are indicated.
