Samples of cannon, tools, pewter and lead taken from ships which sank off the Scilly Isles in 1707, were examined and the structure, composition and corrosion products are reported and compared with similar samples from the ship <i>Wasa in Stockholm. The annealed structure of the large brass cannon could not be explained. The corrosion resistance of the pewter, with 10% lead in tin, was good even in polluted water. The brass ports survived as well as the bronze samples, due to arsenic and antimony in the brass which forestalled dezincification. -- AATA
