Abstract
Remnants of iron furnaces with iron ore, slag, charcoal, and iron were found 0.4-0.6 m below the earth's surface using a proton magnetometer. One location contained 72 furnaces (about 0.5 m in diameter in an area of 6 x 6.5 ra), and 2 other locations contained 17 furnaces. In samples from 58 furnaces and in local surface iron ore (oolitic hematite with SiO2 sandstone) 33 elements were identified spectrometrically, 13 of them in concentrations greater than 1%. The final product had low levels of C, S, Pb, Zn, and Cu and high concentrations of Si, Al, Mn, Ti, and Mg. -- AATA
