Abstract
Preliminary neutron activation analyses have been made using the Slowpoke reactor on several fossil bone samples from sites in the northern Yukon, Canada. The results obtained from this limited set of specimens suggest that by taking sequences of samples as a function of depth through the shafts of individual bones from this area, the penetration of elements into or out of the bones during their burial can be determined and the concentration of elements believed to contribute to the surface coloration of the bones can be determined. The measurements on the complete specimens suggest that, in general, elements which enter the solid bone matrix do so from the hollow interior as well as the exposed exterior, giving rise to strong concentration gradients near the exterior and interior surfaces. However, one sample (a Bison metacarpal) exhibits the opposite distribution for some elements, suggesting that substantial removal of elements may have occurred after the period in which the elements originally entered. The operative flexibility of the Slowpoke reactor and its irradiation facility enables concentrations of sixteen elements to be measured in a sequence of three separate irradiations (10 seconds, 2 minutes, 16 hours). -- AATA
