Abstract
Oriental mounds contain ideal material for archaeomagnetic research. Because of the use of mud-bricks the houses must be renewed every several decades; simultaneously the ovens are rebuilt. This results in a dense sequence of archaeomagnetic structures over long time periods. An area including the Balkans, the Aegean, Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Syria-Palestine, and Egypt is supposed to be connected by archaeomagnetism. First preliminary results from the Hittite capital Hattusa (at Bogazköy in Central-Anatolia) and from the prehistoric mound Demircihüyük (Northwes-Anatolia) may be combined with the archaeomagnetic data from the Balkans. Due to the relative good time sensitivity (up to ± 10y) given by the archaeomagnetic investigation of the direction of the thermoremanence, one can expect an important contribution of archaeomagnetism to problems of synchronism and chronology. -- AATA
