Scientists involved in archaeometry should critically assess trends in applied research. During the last ten years, some archaeological methods achieved a certain level of reliability: i.e., geophysical applications, sampling techniques, treatment of surface finds, computerized management of information including digitized images. These developments resulted in a certain level of confidence in physico-chemical studies. However, archaeometrical methods could be revised in respect to spatial studies in historical archaeology. What has been accomplished needs to be thoroughly evaluated and new operative tools developed: i.e., remote sensing methods designed for fossil, land pattern, and buried feature research. -- AATA
