Art materials under unfavorable environment undergo chemical and physical change which lead to their decay and destruction. Periodic inspection, adequate storage conditions, maintenance of correct temperature and relative humidity, proper lighting, protection from dust, and periodic fumigation are a few preventive measures which protect museum objects from deterioration. Storage rooms in any museum should be clean and well ventilated, equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguisher. For packing, wooden boxes are preferable to metal boxes. These boxes should be waterproof and heat resistant. There should be adequate cushioning to avoid shocks during transportation. -- AATA
