Abstract
Definition of overstrikes: An old coin (minted by couple of dies 1) is minted a second time by c. of dies 2. Sometimes the picture of c. of dies 1 remains partly visible. Investigation of this phenomenon and exact definition of c. of dies 1 often is useful for economic, numismatic, and historical interpretation. The methods of finding overstrikes often involve using metallurgical analysis as a way of detection. Another current method is to use monochromatic x-rays for detecting inhomogeneities of texture in the coin's metal (texture: preferred orientation of some crystallites in the metal-sheet). These monochromatic x-rays are diffracted at the crystallites: on the film the intensity of the x-rays diffracted is reported in relation to the areas of the object being examined, by different quantities of blackening. Inhomogeneities of texture of a coin will be reported on the film. During minting the metal is submitted to a plastic deformation, flowing into the impressions of the die, preferring a texture parallel to the die's outline. A correlation between the relief of the minted coin and the inhomogeneites of texture was hypothesized; x-ray-topograms of the texture, not just on the surface, but also deeper, provided evidence of this correlation. -- AATA
