This report on two ceramic aspects of Messenia that are of archaeological interest--analyses of surface survey shard collections, and study of present-day potters at work and of their products--provides a background for the analysis of the pottery now being excavated. It will also contribute to the broader study of Greek potters who are still able to earn a living as ceramic craftsmen. Their achievements, unfortunately, will soon be of historical rather than contemporary interest, and will become an item for study by industrial archaeologists.
