This paper proposes the first classification of the works of restoration carried out in Venice between 1962 and 1982. It aims to determine how technological concerns are balanced against aesthetic ones in the context of restoration today. The theme is illustrated before, during, and after restoration work on the following objects and monuments: Statua di San Cristoforo (1969), Loggetta del Sansovino (1972), Ponte di Rialto (1975), Lunetta della Madonna del Bacio (1976), Vera da Pozzo in Campo S. Giovanni e Paolo (1978), Baseamento al Colleoni (1978), Ateneo Veneto (1978), Porta della Carta (1979), Lunetta Bon (1982), Vere da Pozzo in Corte Canal (1981), and Chiesa di San Maurizio (1982). The author tried to single out the factors which favored technology and thus jeopardized the formal-figurative enjoyment of the restored pieces, and which, as they purported to convey a sense of history while deliberately eluding the aesthetic approach, resulted in unavoidably betraying the works. The cataloging and documentation of these interventions are the main objectives of this paper.
