Abstract
The testing of the barrier efficiency of a commercial-grade ultraviolet (UV) absorbing compound, Tinuvin 327, manufactured by Ciba-Geigy, within an acrylic resin surface coating, Acryloid B72 (Röhm & Haas), is reported. The technique for screening dammar resin surface coatings is reiterated in light of recent literature on the aging characteristics of dammar resin. Some of the original samples from the 1987 project were reexamined using a spectrophotometer after 30 months of dark storage. All of the UV absorbers exhibited an insignificant but measurable decrease in efficiency. Speculation about long-term volatility and possible loss of efficiency is put forward concerning Tinuvin 327. Alternative UV-absorbing compounds are suggested.
