Abstract
A secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) has been used on an archaeological tooth material from Cyprus, dating ca. 1750-950 BC. Lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, barium, zinc, boron, calcium, silicon, tin, lead, iron, fluorine, and chlorine were analyzed in enamel and dentin. Clear systemic differences were detected between the distributions of 12 elements in the archaeological material and recently extracted teeth. The following tendencies could be observed as consequences of prolonged burial: 1) strong absorption of fluorine in both plateaus, i.e., well-defined parts of the enamel and dentine; 2) clear absorption of lithium, strontium, barium, silicon, and zinc in both plateaus; in the enamel plateau also lead and tin also boron in the dentine plateau; and 3) clear leaching-out tendencies for magnesium, especially in dentine. Sodium and chlorine remain nearly unaffected by burial. If observed time dependence, especially of the concentration of fluorine in the enamel plateau, is found reproducible, the SIMS study might provide a new dating technique for archaeological material.
