Abstract
To remove biological growth from temples in Central India which are separated by hundreds of kilometer with different climatic conditions, the effectiveness of various fungicides-in combination and individually-was tested; results have been monitored for a decade. At the six lofty temples of Khajuraho, observed biological growth was mostly green to brown fungi which became a black, scaly mass during the rainy season. At the massive Neelkanthe shwara temples at Udaipur, 400 miles south of Khajuraho, the growth was widespread and has made the stone fragile. Further south, some 800 kilometers from Khajuraho, at the small temple at Lanji, the biological growth resembled whitewash coating and required different chemicals, possibly because of its location in a forest area with ochre-colored soil surrounding it. Vishnu Temple in Janigir, 300 kilometers east of Lanji, exhibits different growth; here tests of the effectiveness of different fungicides have been done. These fungicides are: 1) zinc silico fluoride; 2) santobrile; 3) benzal konium chloride; 4) thiomersal; 5) thaltox B; and 6) polycide. In addition to these fungicides, some Indian medicinal plants having antifungal, antibacterial properies have been tested.
