Abstract
The weathering of sandstone monument and the deteriorating of some medieval frescoes in cathedrals and castels from Germany were investigated. Fungal growth was observed in the decaying materials, both inside and outside. Therefore, organic acid excretion by the fungal population was considered to be an important factor in the materials' decay. This hypothesis was substantiated by culture experiments, carried out with different aluminosilicate minerals common in building stones.
