Abstract
Techniques for the removal and enumeration of viable bacteria from stone were compared in laboratory studies. Vigorous agitation with surfactant proved to be the most effective method of recovery. Counts of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria on stone from Portchester Castle, a local ancient monument, were obtained using the surfactant treatment in combination with an automated procedure for dilution onto selective media.
