A contribution to the historical development of English church door construction in the Middle Ages. Four small aspects of this development are examined in detail: the development of roves, the use of rounded ledges, the emergence of portcullis bracing, and the aesthetic change in the 14th century whereby wooden tracery superseded decorative iron scrolls as the major form of ornament. The discussion is confined to church doors from the 11th-15th centuries in England, which could be dated fairly closely by documents, wherever possible.
