Abstract
The theory of optics as it relates to the surface appearance of a painting is summarized: reflection; refraction; polarization and issues of perception. The interaction of light with a clean and then a soiled paint surface is discussed. The grayish appearance of dirt on a surface is discussed in terms of the turbid medium effect.
