This paper is intended to give an overview of the present state of wallpaper conservation activities in the UK. There are several groups of paper conservators with recent or current experience of treating historic wallpapers and, although some methods are standard paper conservation practice, in many cases old techniques have to be modified or new ones devised. The paper draws on case histories to illustrate and outline possible methods for treatments such as cleaning, repair and lining. There are also various approaches to the re-mounting of treated wallpapers and an evaluation of some of these is made. Also included is a brief description of the vital preparation required in the treatment of in situ wallpapers; study of building structure, liaison with architects, and estimating time and costs involved.
