An account of the conservation treatment of a Yuan dynasty banknote (Zhongtong reign, 1260-1264) from the Aurel Stein collection. The banknote was encapsulated in polyester film and sewn into place around the fragments using an industrial sewing machine and fine monofilament sewing thread. Sewing allows the conservator to follow the irregular contours of fragmentary material, unlike ultrasonic welding or pressure-sensitive tape.
