Abstract
Natural film-forming substances can be classified into five main categories: proteins, polysaccharides, oils and fats, waxes, and natural resins. The author explains how these substances can be identified through staining tests; infrared absorption spectroscopy; thin-layer, gas, pyrolisis gas, and liquid chromatography; mass spectroscopy; and differential thermal analysis. It is advisable to use more than one method for each sample.
