Abstract
Two complementary source of information are used for the scientific examination of art works: the application of radiation with wavelengths ranging from gamma rays to the near infrared, and the chemical analysis of samples. Microscopic investigations, microchemical analysis, and spectroscopic techniques are surveyed. A synopsis of pigments and dyes, their chemical composition, period of use and chemical identification tests is provided. Diagrams, references. -- ICCROM
